Impact Windows Engineered to Withstand Hurricanes and Home Runs

Certain Pella® windows can stop speeding baseballs and others can withstand hurricane-force winds. How?

When it comes to hurricane-resistance, Pella HurricaneShield® windows and patio doors rated to ASTM E1996 missile D rating are meticulously tested for impact resistance.

Tests involve blasting a two-by-four at the window to verify glass keeps intact. We use our hurricane cannon to launch the wood, which covers 50 feet per second.

It Started with Hurricane Testing

We thought, if we could engineer a hurricane window with impact-resistant glass, surely we could find a resolution that could protect from home runs from Major League Baseball teams.

When Pella was asked to help outfit a historic building outside of Wrigley Field with home run-resistant windows, that’s exactly what we did.

We modified our hurricane cannon to test the home run-resistant windows. We shot baseballs from the cannon at an angle and speed that would mimic the power of a home run.

Our tempered glass weathered the home runs best because it’s stronger and safer than commonly used annealed glass.

All About Physics

It takes a speed surpassing 100 mph and a height greater than 100 feet to shoot a baseball out of the park.

In Wrigley’s scenario, we determined the baseballs would be going at about 60 mph upon impact with windows.

But we exceeded requirements and evaluated impact resistance up to 100 mph.

More Benefits of Tempered Glass in Pella® Windows

Even if you’re not thinking about an MLB home run being launched at your windows, there are many reasons to use strong, tempered glass in your Pella windows and doors.

It’s good for homeowners who want an added level of safety from their windows or patio doors. Or those who are raising the next great baseball player.

Review the benefits and highlights of Pella tempered glass options:

  • Toughened glass similar to what is used in car windows.
  • Used where injuries from broken glass are a concern.
  • Usually shatters into small, square fragments rather than sharp shards if broken.
  • Glass doesn’t fall apart if shattered.

Tempered glass is available in all Pella windows and patio doors. To find out more about impact windows and if they may be right for your home, call Pella of Santa Fe at 505-373-1286. Or, schedule a free, in-home consultation online.
