How to Properly Clean Your Windows: Our Tried-and-True Cleaning Process

Windows are important to your home’s beauty and comfort; they offer a beautiful view of outside, protect the inside of your home from the elements and they let in sunlight to brighten up your house. Because they are so important to a home, they see a lot of action. It’s a good idea to keep your windows clean so that they keep functioning as they should.

Window glass can get dirty pretty easily, especially with little hands or pets in the home, but luckily glass cleaning isn’t difficult. Many Pella Windows and Doors Southwest windows have easy-clean features that also make it painless to clean the exterior of your windows from the inside of your house, too. Looking for an easy, new window cleaning process? Here’s what Pella Windows and Doors Southwest recommends:

  1. Start by brushing off your window sill with a small broom or brush. The dirt and dust that gathers on the sill and ledges will remain there for a long time otherwise, and doing this first will also prevent smearing on the glass later on. You should not use the same cleaning cloth that you will eventually use to clean the glass!
  2. Run your vacuum’s dusting brush attachment over the side of your window screen that faces inside. You can also use this vacuum piece to suck up any leftover dirt and dust on your sills.
  3. Use a premixed vinegar-based cleaning solution, or an ammonia-free glass cleaner like Windex® or Sparkle® to clean your window’s glass. You can create your own vinegar-based solution by mixing one-part white vinegar to 10 parts water. Apply your cleaner generously to a clean, lint-free cloth or paper towel and wipe down your glass from a variety of different directions for the best clean.
  4. Give your windows time to air dry and then rinse your glass with clean water if you see streaks.

Here are some more tips, too! We suggest that you clean your windows on a cloudy day because the sun will dry the cleaning solution too quickly and leave streaks on your glass. Also, our Pella Windows and Doors Southwest professionals select microfiber cloths since they are the least likely to leave tiny particles behind.

Take care of your beautiful view, protection barrier and light source by keeping your windows clean in every season.
